The Secret of Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

I just did an interview for a magazine on the topic of SEO and afterwards I came up with a single sentence that summed it all up.

"While people optimize sites for search engines, search engines are trying to look at sites like people"

James Edmunds's Gravatar I love that one sentence! I will be quoting you...

Danny-T's Gravatar I'd almost agree there, however the use of the word TRYING is all important. It isn't exactly the case hence the dominance of search results by directories and domain parking. Any web developer should be aware of the technical implications for lending your code to seach engine readability.

As a general guideline though I would agree with your sentance, not withstanding the annoying technical implications that one should also be aware of.

Michael Dinowitz's Gravatar The quote was just the first step. Expect a number of posts by me after CFUnited on SEO. The first will be on H tags, the page title and thoughts on page organization.

David Levin's Gravatar You are absolutely right. Search Engine companies are constantly trying to make their engines 'smarter' all the time and rumor has it, companies like Google penalize sites that use sneaky SEO tricks (hidden text, links, etc.). I think the best way to play it is just to be honest and make sure your site is accessable. If your grandmother can browse your site, then chances are the search engines can too.

Arizona SEO's Gravatar Great statement Michael. I think it's pretty accurate, but don't believe it will ever be realized 100%. How can an algorithm emulate a real person? You can't program actions that derive from emotions & human interpretation.
